Rescue specialists have recovered one of two men who were swept into the ocean on Kauai’s north shore today and are looking for the other man.
The Kauai Fire Department said preliminary reports are that two men were walking on a rocky shoreline about 11:30 a.m. between Kalihiwai Bay and Kauapea Beach, commonly known as Secret Beach, when high surf swept them into the ocean.
Fire rescue personnel on a helicopter responded along with lifeguards on jet ski. Personnel in the helicopter found one of the victims, a 47-year-old man, and flew him to Kalihiwai Beach, where medics drove him to Wilcox Hospital.
The search continued for the second man.
Spokeswoman Sarah Blane said the area where the two swimmers were swept into sea occurred in the same general area where Adam Griffiths and Brian Baker drowned in January.
Griffiths and Baker, both of San Francisco, were hiking with friends along a remote rocky area when Baker, 47, was struck by a rogue wave. Griffiths, 46, attempted to rescue him but also was swept into sea.
