Humpbacks are among the most easily recognised whales because of their long flippers.
They get their name from the hump under the dorsal fin, which is particularly noticeable when the mammal arches its back to dive.
The humpback can reach a maximum length of 15-18 meters and weigh up to 40 tons.
During the peak of the whaling industry’s activities in the 1960s and 70s, the numbers of humpbacks fell dramatically, and although they are now protected, they are still considered a vulnerable species by marine environmentalists.
