Rescue crews are searching by air, boat, and ground looking for signs of a missing 34-year old Hawaii-based Navy SEAL diver.
“We’re all doing the best we can to try and scour the area and we’re all holding onto hope that we can find him”, said Capt. Terry Seelig of the Honolulu Fire Department.
The Navy says sailors were training off Kaena Point when the 34-year-old was reported missing.
The Coast Guard launched a joint search effort focusing on an area a few miles northwest of the point.
They’re using computer models which calculate environmental factors like currents and wind speeds to show the area where he would most
likely be.
“There’s a pattern of drift and we’re focusing on part of that, our area is mostly the shore area around Kaena Point”, said Seelig.
“It gets difficult to safely fly so we haven’t been able to use the helicopter the whole time. The ocean conditions are making it more difficult”.
The Coast Guard says it has no plans to call off the search at this point and all remain hopeful.
The diver was last seen wearing a full body wet suit and had a weight belt, but it’s unknown if he had a dive flag when he went missing.
